The term ischaemic stroke is generally used to describe the closure of large cerebral arteries by a blood clot, or ”thrombus”. This kind of vessel occlusion leads to a reduction in the blood flow and thus to an insufficient supply of oxygen to the area of the brain affected. Longer lasting occlusions can cause irreversible damage to the brain cells – a cerebral infarction.
It is thus vital to restore the flow of blood to the affected area of the brain by removing the clot as quickly as possible.
In addition to drug treatment, mechanical thrombectomy has proved a successful form of treatment.
An intracranial stenosis is a narrowing of the arteries supplying blood to the brain, which is generally caused by arteriosclerosis – a systemic disease leading to deposits of blood lipids, clots, connective tissue and lime.
If it is symptomatic and untreated, an intracranial stenosis presents a very high stroke risk and it should therefore be treated as a matter of urgency.
Alongside drug therapy, intracranial stenosis are treated in interventional neuroradiology by minimally invasive vessel expansion using a balloon catheter (percutaneous transluminal angioplasty – PTA). This treatment is supported if necessary by the implantation of a stent.
